Colon Hydrotherapy Q&A
Why is Avra Organic Spa different than other wellness centers?
Our Colon Hydrotherapists are certified through the Internal Environment Institute of Colon Therapy. We also belong to the International Association of Colon Therapy (I-ACT) and pursue continuing education. Not only are we educated on the specific practice of colon therapy, we practice modified acupressure and reflexology to help our clients have more productive sessions. Lastly, we use only FDA-approved equipment and disposable speculums.
Why is Colon Hydrotherapy so effective?
Colon Hydrotherapy tones and hydrates the colon. The gentle filling and flushing of the colon helps to break down and remove accumulated waste and toxic material so that assimilation and elimination are no longer inhibited. Once impacted material is removed, your colon can begin to function as it was meant to. Muscular contraction is improved, and a series of colonics will actually help speed up the transit time of waste matter.Colon Hydrotherapy also reshapes the colon. When impactions exist in the colon, they alter its shape and structure, which can in turn cause more health problems. The gentle action of the water, coupled with the massage techniques utilized by the Colon Hydrotherapist, help eliminate areas of constriction, thus enabling the colon to resume its natural state.
Is there anything I need to do to get ready for Colon Hydrotherapy?
We recommend that you eat or drink lightly in the two hours before your session. Some clients may choose to fast the day before or the day of their session. Please note that protein is essential to any detoxification protocol, so an excellent meal to have before your colonic would be miso soup and veggie broths. Colon Hydrotherapy is also highly recommended in conjunction with any cleanse.
What can I expect afterwards?
Most clients report feeling lighter, refreshed, and energized. Colon Hydrotherapy may trigger several subsequent bowel movements for the next few hours, but there is usually no uncontrollable urgency or discomfort. You may continue all of your normal activities the day of your colonic.
I've been told that a series of colonics is most beneficial. What does that mean, and is it true?
To obtain long-lasting results, a series of colonics is recommended. A series may be prescribed for each day, every other day, or once per week. However, your colon hydrotherapist will work with you to determine the best route to wellness.
A series of 3-6 colonics is recommended for hydrating the colon. A series of 6-15 colonics is recommended to cleanse the colon. A series of 15-30 sessions is recommended for an individual who would like to make a serious change in his or her digestive function. In conjunction with an improved diet, exercise, proper rest, and nutritional supplementation, colon hydrotherapy can help transform a client's digestive abilities. Many of our clients find it valuable to continue cleansing once a month or so to maintain the benefits they have experienced.
Are colonics dangerous in any way?
Colon Hydrotherapy is a very safe procedure that does not generate any adverse effects. Of course, if you have any medical issues you should always obtain your doctor’s permission before trying a colonic.
Are colonics habit-forming?
No. Colonics actually tone the colon muscle, increasing colon function.
Will a colonic make me constipated or give me diarrhea?
The most frequent post-colonic experience is to have a slight delay in bowel movements and then a resumption of somewhat larger, easier to move stool. In some cases, if the colon is weak and sluggish there may be no bowel movement for several days following a colonic. This is not due to the colonic, but rather to the lack of muscle tone in the colon.
I've heard that I shouldn't get colonics because it upsets the electrolyte balance. Is this true?
One major function of the colon is to reabsorb the fluid and electrolytes from unformed stool that is moving into the colon from the small intestine. After the fluid and electrolytes are reabsorbed and stool is formed, the colon moves the stool into the rectum and out of the body. Thus, the majority of the material released during a colonic is formed stool that has already had the fluid and electrolytes removed from it. Now with that said, at Avra we give our clients a mixture of Himalayan sea salt and water to help re-mineralize the body and re-balance your electrolytes to ensure your body comes back to balance after each session.
Some people say that colonics wash out the intestinal flora. Is this so?
Since beneficial bacteria can only breed in clean intestinal mucosa, colonics actually increase the populations of good intestinal flora by providing an ideal environment for colonization. With this in mind, we do recommend supplementing with beneficial bacteria after a colonic so that colonization can take place in the cleansed tissue.
What effect does Colon Hydrotherapy have on our immune systems?
The removal of stagnant waste material helps to rejuvenate the immune tissue that resides in the intestines. In fact, recent European studies show that 80% of immune tissue resides in the intestines.
What will be okay to eat after getting a colonic?
We suggest that you eat a moderate amount of gentle and nourishing foods. Green leafy salads, vegetable soups, miso, fruit, and vegetable juices are great options.
How will I know when the colon is empty?
The colon will never be empty, as we are continually eating and processing food. The objective ought not to be an empty colon, but rather a well-functioning colon.
